Approximately 100,000 people live in Kenosha. However, the city in the state of Wisconsin has been at the center of the US election campaign for about two weeks. Now, the Democratic presidential candidate of the United States, Joe Biden, also visited Kenosha two days after the president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The place was rocked by riots after police shot an African-American man. At the Milwaukee airport, Biden met for the first time on camera for about 90 minutes with the family of the seriously injured Jacob Blake.
He also called Blake himself, who is still in the hospital, for about 15 minutes. A white policeman shot him in the back seven times. The 29-year-old could be permanently paraplegic. “He spoke about the fact that he cannot be defeated, regardless of whether or not he will ever run again,” Biden wrote after the conversation.
Biden also commented on his rival in the November 3 election, incumbent Trump. According to Biden, his behavior “legitimizes the dark side of human nature.” The president actively tries to prevent social progress.
Later, Biden, wearing a mask due to the coronavirus pandemic, traveled to Kenosha and heard reports from residents, shopkeepers and police about discrimination and rioting at a church.
The governor was also not enthusiastic about Biden’s visit.
Biden’s visit is in stark contrast to Trump’s. Trump had been demonstratively siding with the police, describing the protests as internal terrorism. He had gone to Kenosha despite the fact that both the Democratic Governor of Wisconsin and the Mayor of Kenosha had publicly asked not to attend.
They feared that their presence could further heat the situation. But he remained largely calm. Blake’s family did not know Trump. The governor said Thursday that he wished the two candidates had stayed away.
