With the arrival of Joe Biden, normalcy should return to the White House, especially when it comes to communication. Therefore, the president-elect of the United States has a team of expert women. “Communicating directly and sincerely with the people of the United States is one of the most important jobs of a president,” Biden said Sunday night (local time). The prominent role of the government spokesperson goes to Jen Psaki.
Biden knows them well: Psaki was under former President Barack Obama, among other things, as White House communications director and State Department spokesman. Since the election, Psaki had held several briefings with Biden reporters. It seemed clear and professional. His White House deputy will be Karine Jean-Pierre, who last worked for Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, as Biden explained.
“I am proud to announce the first high-ranking women-only communications team in the White House today,” Biden said. The “qualified and experienced” candidates bring different approaches and a common will to move the country forward, Biden said. Harris said, “These communication professionals represent our promise to create a White House that reflects the best of our country.”
Biden’s current deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield will become White House communications director. This gives it a less public role, but one that is important in defining the government’s overall communications strategy. Pili Tobar, in turn, will become a substitute for Bedingfields. An advisor to Biden’s campaign team, Symone Sanders, is expected to become the vice president’s spokesperson. Ashley Etienne is slated to serve as Harris’s communications director.
Biden was declared the winner by the US media after the November 3 election. She is scheduled to be sworn in as the new president on January 20, with Harris as the first female vice president. Biden has already held various positions in the White House and nominated various members of the Cabinet. More personal details, including the presidency of the National Economic Council, are expected to be announced on Monday. According to a New York Times report, the post will be for Brian Deese, who was a White House adviser during Obama’s term.
Turbulent personnel changes under Trump
Acting President Donald Trump had repeatedly swapped his communications team: Sean Spicer was initially the White House spokesperson, followed by Sarah Sanders, Stephanie Grisham, and most recently Kayleigh McEnany. The communications director position has also been filled repeatedly, particularly curious was Anthony Scaramucci’s eleven-day interlude (read an interview with him about Trump here).
Meanwhile, Trump continues to refuse to acknowledge Biden’s victory. He has been talking about “massive electoral fraud” for weeks, but has not produced any reliable evidence. The US courts have already thrown out numerous lawsuits aimed at challenging the election results and their Republican allies.
However, after several weeks of rejection, the Trump administration finally initiated the orderly handover required by law. This Monday, for the first time, Biden and Harris were to receive the strictly confidential briefing of the secret services, which normally only reaches the White House. In addition, the head of the White House Crown task force, Deborah Birx, said in a television interview that she also hopes to speak with Biden on Monday.
