The earthquake at 6:26 pm local time (10:26 pm CET) had a force of 7.2 and occurred at a depth of 60 kilometers in the Miyagi prefecture area, the meteorological authority announced.

According to operator Tokyo Electric Power, there were no irregularities Saturday at the ruin of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi power station further south, where the disaster occurred following an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Power supplier Tohoku Electric Power, according to its own statements, halted operations at its Onagawa nuclear power plant in Miyagi prefecture as a precaution. According to the Ministry of Industry, the electricity was cut off in 200 homes. Shinkansen express trains in the region were stopped as a precaution, according to NHK. The earthquake was also felt in the capital, Tokyo, about 400 kilometers south of the epicenter.
