Israel: Hundreds Protest Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv

Hundreds of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv against the policies of right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Due to the crown pandemic, participants maintained a safe distance of two meters in Rabin’s central square.

A police spokesperson spoke of several hundred participants, while the media spoke of thousands. The protesters protested, among other things, against the coalition agreement between Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz of the blue-white center alliance.

According to the protesters, the agreement between Gantz and Netanyahu, suspected of corruption and will therefore have to respond in a trial next month, is jeopardizing democracy.

Netanyahu had classified the corruption charges against him as an attempted coup and had repeatedly criticized the Israeli judiciary. Gantz had long rejected a coalition with Netanyahu accused of accusing him. On Monday, the two also agreed to form a “national emergency government” with a view to the Corona crisis.

In a speech, Karmi Gillon, a former Shin Bet head of domestic intelligence, asked Netanyahu to “stop the aggressive smear campaign against Supreme Court justices,” according to media reports. If a judge is killed, Netanyahu will be held responsible, Gillon said.

In this regard, he recalled the murder of former Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin by a Jewish fanatic in November 1995. Even then he warned Netanyahu, but he had not heard it.

The “Black Flags” movement sees Netanyahu’s continued rule as a threat to democracy in the country. They often demonstrate with vehicles on which they place black flags as a symbol of danger.
