The deadline to form a government in Israel expires on Monday. Benny Gantz of Mitte-Bündnis Blau-Weiß has up to a minute before midnight (10:59 p.m. CET) to form a coalition. President Reuvin Rivlin refused to extend it another two weeks on Sunday.

Gantz had requested this after negotiations over a grand coalition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party were unsuccessful. If both sides fail to reach an agreement before the deadline on Monday, the mandate to form a government will go to Parliament. Then all MPs, including Gantz and Netanyahu, can try to find a majority of 61 out of 120 MPs for a government coalition within 21 days. If this fails, Israel must vote a fourth time.
