Iran wants the EU to act as a mediator

IRan has spoken in favor of the EU acting as a mediator in the dispute over the international nuclear agreement. EU foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell could coordinate Washington and Tehran’s return to the deal, Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Jawad Zarif told CNN on Monday. Borrell could propose “the measures that the United States should take and the measures that Iran should take.”

When asked whether Iran or the United States would first have to meet the conditions to return to the nuclear deal, Sarif replied that the necessary measures could be taken simultaneously or in a coordinated manner. Borrell, who is the ex officio coordinator of a joint body of the nuclear deal, could campaign for this.

Sarif promised that Iran could deliver its recently increased quantity of highly enriched uranium “in less than a day” if the United States lifted the sanctions imposed by then-President Donald Trump and returned to the international nuclear deal.

Biden could reverse Trump’s departure

The administration of new US President Joe Biden has signaled its willingness to return to the 2018 nuclear deal with Iran. Biden’s Foreign Minister Blinken had said his country would revert to the deal if Tehran once again adheres to all the terms of the deal.

Iranian President Hassan Ruhani, in turn, urged the United States to take the first step to resolve the dispute because Washington had abandoned the agreement. If the United States refuses, Iran wants to restrict inspections by the UN Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the country.

The nuclear agreement concluded in Vienna in 2015 aims to prevent Iran from building an atomic bomb. China, Russia, Germany, France and Great Britain have also signed it. In 2018, then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally rescinded the deal he deemed inappropriate and put new sanctions in place against Tehran. Then Iran gradually withdrew from the deal. The sanctions plunged the oil-rich country into the worst economic crisis in its history.
