The design of 2012, the technology of 2020. Apple plays it safe and dares little news.
The corona virus also manages to mess up Apple’s keynotes. The excursion, which used to last several hours, to a country full of great, wonderful, super-fast and shocking passepartout words had to give way to a canned spectacle. The switch was made in Cupertino promptly at 7 p.m. What followed was a 60-minute presentation featuring four new iPhones and a mini smart speaker. The spark really didn’t want to jump.
In times of great uncertainty, Apple chooses the tried and tested route. The design of the new iPhones takes you back to 2012. They are more angular, packed to the brim with the latest technology and an internal processor with the name A14-Bionic sounds. Apple also includes a scanner to capture rooms in 3D, a new photography format, Dolby Vision, for video recordings on devices. Features the average consumer will never use.
The only really bright look of the night was probably the cheap iPhone 12 Mini. For years, manufacturers have introduced their compact and mini versions to the market. Always with the same error: technically very small, but externally very large. In complete contrast to what customers have been asking for for years. Apple fulfilled this wish: the iPhone Mini 12 is almost five inches tall, but it has the same main features as its bigger brother.
More courage, Apple!
However, many wishes remain unfulfilled: facial recognition that finally works with a mouth-and-nose mask; Cameras that no longer protrude; a 120Hz display. Or pretty bold: a USB-C instead of its own proprietary Lightning connection; There has also been an EU regulation for years that Apple cleverly ignores.
Or very daring: How about a folding cell phone or an ultra-fast charging technology that charges the iPhone in minutes? Apple’s 5G phones can do this. Those of Samsung, Huawei and company can also do it. It is just as useless there. Why buy a more expensive 5G cell phone and pay a wildly expensive fee when the network, to put it mildly, is only under construction?
It will be years before 5G is widely available and we can get lost in the super fast download times and low latencies.
