Just a pleasantly warm end of summer, now the first winter weather conditions: a cold front has reached Austria and motorists feel the drop in temperature, especially on the higher roads.
The weekend has ended with the beautiful end of summer. A cold front entered Austria on Friday, bringing cool autumn weather to snow in the mountains.
On Saturday night, the snow line narrowed significantly. Bad Gastein, 1000 meters above sea level, was already covered in deep snow at night. As you can see from the pictures, there was no dry, loose snow, but heavy and very wet.

Summer tires instead of snow chains
ÖAMTC breakdown assistants logged numerous missions at the Salzburger Gebirgsgau last night due to the onset of winter. Also in Obertauern, many drivers got stuck in fresh snow or ran off the road. “Although snow chains were mandatory on the B 99 from Untertauern to Tweng, most drivers were on the road with summer tires,” reports breakdown assistant Markus Kocher from ÖAMTC Tamsweg. The “Yellow Angel” and his colleagues were out all night to rush to help drivers in need. “Thank goodness it was just slips and minor sheet metal damage,” Kocher said.
At the end of the summer there were still highs of up to 26 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. “At the weekend it is ten to 15 degrees cooler than in recent days, and it can snow above 1,000 to 1,300 meters,” says Bernd Niedermoser, head of the ZAMG office in Salzburg-Freisaal.
Half a meter of fresh snow in the mountains
From around 1,500 meters above sea level, ZAMG expects four to twelve inches of fresh snow on the weekend, and a little more in the high mountains. This means that winter driving conditions are possible on higher pass roads. Maximum temperatures on Saturdays and Sundays in most of Austria are only ten degrees, in the south and east in places around 15 degrees.
The state of Tirol recommended caution on Friday due to the snowfall expected for the weekend. Depending on the altitude, up to half a meter of fresh snow could fall. You must be especially careful with the paths and walks in higher areas of the forest.
The snow breaks the leafy branches
The trees still have leaves and therefore there is a risk that the branches will break. “It is also important to be careful when driving on summer tires, especially in the Arlberg area, where winter road conditions can sometimes prevail,” he said in a transmission. Caution is advised on passing roads such as Bielerhöhe, Paznaun, Arlberg, Lechtal hinteres, Hahntennjoch, Fernpass, Timmelsjoch, Reschenpass, Brenner, Felbertauern and Staller Sattel.
The same naturally applies to other mountain roads in Germany. In Salzburg, for example, when passing through Thurn Pass, Gerlosstraße, Radstädter Tauern (Obertauern) or Katschberg.
Heavy rain
Especially on Saturday, the sudden change in weather shows what you can do. The ZAMG forecast states: “In addition, it rains heavily in some areas and from the Salzkammergut through Upper Styria to the eastern edge of the Alps also heavily in the morning. During the day, however, the rainfall significantly decreases and eventually decreases. in the East”.
Snow remains
The snow line is usually between 1000 and 1600 meters above sea level, further down there is occasionally wet sleet. The snow will remain lying, especially at higher altitudes, from 1500 meters above sea level, sometimes more than 20 centimeters are possible. It is partially loosened from the main Carnic ridge to Karawanken. Here there are only a few showers, above 1400 meters above sea level there are snow showers. On the ridge layers, the wind blows widely from west to northwest, and in addition to winter conditions, snow breaks should also be expected! At 2,000 meters above sea level, temperatures range from zero to minus five degrees.
Valentina, Wycca and Xyla
According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the change was caused by a large low-pressure complex in Central Europe. There are actually even three low-pressure areas, a DWD meteorologist said, namely the Valentina lows over northern Norway, Wicca over northern Germany and Xyla over northern Italy. This trio will also give us a varied weather situation for the next week.
