If there had been no Ibiza

Beate Hartinger-Klein would moderate the crown crisis alongside Sebastian Kurz. Herbert Kickl would continue to be Minister of the Interior. And the Federal President’s word would have less weight. More than a year (politically) crazy.

What if the Ibiza video had never existed? The basic formation of the crown crisis would look different today: Sebastian Kurz would still be chancellor, but there would not be Werner Kogler, Rudolf Anschober and Karl Nehammer at his side, but Heinz-Christian Strache as vice chancellor, Beate Hartinger-Klein as minister of Health and Herbert Kickl as Minister of the Interior. The exit restrictions could have been even tighter. The opposition almost certainly would not have supported the government’s measures to the same extent. SPÖ, lists the mushrooms and the Greens protested vehemently. But at least almost no one would have listened to the Greens: they wouldn’t even have been on the National Council.

The Ibiza video, released on May 17, 2019 by “Süddeutscher Zeitung” and “Spiegel”, was the beginning of a year that cannot be called politically insane. Crazy in the true sense of the word: in May 2020, (almost) nothing is the same as in May 2019.
