The sporting ambitions of the EHV Linz, which was founded almost a year ago after an internal power struggle, are history for the moment. Kristine Egger resigned as president of the association. The ambitious goals cannot currently be achieved, Egger said Monday, referring to the withdrawal of major sponsors.
The association announced in a broadcast that the application for admission would be officially withdrawn. A corresponding letter had been sent to the league. “Despite intense efforts, we were unable to follow the path we had taken to the end,” explained Vice President Stefan Gintenreiter, who will cease the club’s activities following Egger’s retirement.
Major sponsors Liwest and Linz AG announced Sunday that they would withdraw from sponsorship in professional ice hockey. “In view of the current circumstances and the ongoing disputes surrounding the professional league, Linz AG does not see any possibility of improving its image,” the letter said. Egger participated in the financial support of the Linz family business KE KELIT. The company also does not want to continue participating in professional sports in the future.
The end of the struggle for power in Linz
This puts an end to turbulent times in Linz ice hockey for the time being. In March of the previous year, a power struggle had escalated over the person of manager Christian Perthaler. Black Wings President Peter Freunschlag went on the offensive with an open letter; separation from Perthaler was inevitable. Former Black Wings vice presidents and sponsors founded the “Ice Hockey Club Linz”, and Linz AG temporarily withdrew the use of the Black Wings ice rink. Major fan clubs have also announced that they will support EHV in the future.
In June of the previous year, however, the league voted against a second Linz representative in the ICE league, the application to participate lost the required two-thirds majority. After renewed progress a few weeks ago, the EHV wanted to present itself again to representatives and commissions on Wednesday. VEU Feldkirch, Olimpija Ljubljana and HC Pustertal should also be interested in joining. There are currently eleven clubs playing in the league.
