‘I could have a vaccine in three or four weeks’

The president of the United States gives hope and mocks his predecessor. The Obama administration ‘could have taken years’

US President Donald Trump expects an effective coronavirus vaccine in the next three to four weeks. “We are about to have a vaccine,” he told ABC News Tuesday night.

“If you want to know the truth, because of the FDA and all its approvals, it could have taken the government years before to get a vaccine. And we could have it in weeks, three weeks, four weeks now.

Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BionTech confirmed last week that they would apply for approval in October if their Phase 3 study of a joint vaccine candidate was successful.

Experts expect multiple corona vaccines

The Standing Commission for Vaccination (Stiko) of the Robert Koch Institute expects that there will be several different vaccines against the new coronavirus in Germany. In view of the large number of candidate vaccines, this is “likely,” Stiko Vice President Sabine Wicker told the Funke media group (Wednesday editions).

It could be that individual vaccines are particularly suitable for certain population groups, such as the elderly. The Vaccination Commission is tasked with setting priorities in the event that initially a vaccine is only available in limited quantities. To do this, it must be ascertained which population groups are at higher risk of infection and “who would benefit the most from a vaccine,” Wicker said. This risk-benefit analysis is a central element of Stiko’s standardized approach.

In the case of the coronavirus, the groups with special need for protection were medical personnel, as well as the chronically ill and the elderly, the doctor explained. Stiko already established a working group in the spring to develop vaccination recommendations in the corona pandemic. The Commission could not wait for a specific vaccine to be approved. Rather, you must define “a framework of recommendations” in advance.

German Research Minister Anja Karliczek and Health Minister Jens Spahn (both CDUs) were confident on Tuesday that a corona vaccine would be available next year. Karliczek also said: “We have to be prepared for the fact that a vaccine will not be available until the middle of next year.” When developing the serum, safety is a “top priority.”

The two ministers announced that the development of a corona vaccine by German companies will be supported with 750 million euros as part of a special program. 375 million euros will go to the Biontech company in Mainz and 230 million euros to the Tübingen manufacturer Curevac. In addition, support will be given to the IDT Biologika company from Dessau-Rosslau.
