This applies to travelers and businesses.

Travelers can cross borders. However, only if they have their place of residence or work within 30 kilometers of the border. This applies to both Austrians and Hungarians. In addition, the stay in the other country is limited to 24 hours.

However, to do this, you also need a form that you must have online.

Special permits for exceptional cases can also be applied for online on the Hungarian police website. However, from experience in spring we know that these are granted very rarely. An exception is, for example, if you have to go to Hungary in the course of an official procedure. For example, in the case of a court hearing.

By the way: if a special permit is granted, it must still be quarantined for 2 weeks.

Employees of companies that have a location in Austria and Hungary can cross the border on business trips.

Nehammer calms down: “As in spring”

Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) tried to calm down on Monday. Border management “will work as in the spring, through exceptional regulations and close coordination,” he announced in a broadcast after a phone call with his Hungarian counterpart Sandor Pinter on Monday.

In particular, the way of working or transporting goods across the border must be fast and uncomplicated, Nehammer explained. “If there are individual problems or difficulties, these are quickly dealt with between ministers or police chiefs.”

The Industrial Union (IV) had previously criticized the neighboring country’s measure. “We are facing a potential burden on national companies, and that in very challenging economic times,” IV Secretary General Christoph Neumayer said in a broadcast.

It revolves around the 30-kilometer rule for travelers

He called for better regulation for travelers. Under the Hungarian ordinance, this states that only travelers within a 30 kilometer radius can enter Hungary and stay there for a maximum of 24 hours.
