After the bloody terrorist attack in the Austrian capital Vienna, more and more details are known. The murdered terrorist has been identified and the police, about 1,000 people, are on duty. An overview of the current state of knowledge.
secondIn an Islamist terrorist attack in central Vienna, several people were killed and injured on Monday night. The attack had started around 8 p.m. in a nightlife district, where many people were out shortly before the curfews of the new crown began. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz condemned the attack as a “repulsive terrorist attack”. At 8:09 pm, an assailant was “neutralized” by the police. It is not yet clear whether he acted alone.
Also on Tuesday morning, the population was asked to avoid District 1 and, if possible, not to go outside. The entire center of the Austrian capital was cordoned off at night. In addition to the police, soldiers were also deployed to protect the property.
What we know:
– Four dead. At least four bystanders were killed in the attack: two men and two women, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer confirmed to the APA news agency. According to Chancellor Kurz, it is about a waitress, a young passerby, an old woman, and an old gentleman. In addition, the police fired at the perpetrator.
– Several injured. In addition to the dead, 17 people were injured in the attack. 14 people are seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, including a 28-year-old patrol officer, whose condition is therefore critically stable. According to Kurz, some of the seriously injured remain in mortal danger.
– Heavily armed perpetrator. According to Mayor Ludwig, the murdered murderer was heavily armed. Ludwig told the ORF that he had a long pistol, a pistol, and a machete with him. Meanwhile, the police announced via Twitter that an explosive belt worn by the murdered attacker was a mannequin. According to Nehammer, the killer was 20 years old, had roots in North Macedonia and had a relevant criminal record for belonging to a terrorist organization.
– Various house searches and arrests. The perpetrator has now been identified. The 20-year-old IS supporter had roots in North Macedonia and had a relevant criminal record for belonging to a terrorist organization. During the house searches “in the vicinity of the perpetrator,” several people were arrested, the Interior Ministry reported in the morning. The perpetrator’s house was blown up. According to “Kurier”, the address was in the city of St. Pölten, in Lower Austria.
– Six crime scenes in Vienna. According to the police, there were six different crime scenes. The first shots were fired on Seitenstettengasse, a busy street in the center. There is also a synagogue there. In the attack, “people in the bars” were shot “at random”, especially people who were sitting outside. Other points of attack were Morzinplatz, Salzgries, Graben, the farmers market and the meat market. According to the Interior Ministry, the police are currently creating a so-called time-of-route diagram, which should also help determine whether the attacker who was killed acted alone.
– Islamist background. According to Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, the terrorist attack in Vienna was caused by at least one Islamist terrorist. The killer was a sympathizer of the Islamic State terrorist militia, Nehammer said. According to information from “Bild”, the Austrian security authorities are checking whether an Instagram account of a Vienna jihadist, which has now been closed, shows the murderer who shot several people with an assault rifle.
According to the researchers, this is considered likely. On Monday morning, several photos were posted on the Instagram account: an oath of allegiance to the new IS leader and ammunition with the IS slogan. There is no official confirmation for this yet.
What we don’t know:
– Exact number of attackers. From the authorities’ point of view, it is not yet clear whether one or more attackers were involved. The investigation was in full swing, Interior Minister Nehammer said. Currently around 20,000 photos and videos that were sent to the police by the population are being evaluated. “Currently we cannot rule out that there are other perpetrators,” the interior minister said.
– The reason: Despite the connection to the IS terrorist militia, the specific motive for the act is as little known as a letter or video confessing it. Did Sagittarius want to spread panic in the popular nightlife district or did they choose the synagogue as their destination? According to the president of Israelitische Kultusgemeinde, Oskar Deutsch, both the synagogue and the office building at the same address were no longer in operation and were closed at the time of the first shots.
– Briefly tells the ORF that it is still unclear when public life could be resumed. Compulsory schooling was suspended Tuesday and citizens were also called Tuesday morning to avoid the affected district. The Director General of Public Security, Franz Ruf, announced that controls at the Austrian borders will be increased. Barricades should be erected in Vienna.
