“Hit for the movie”: safes in Vienna and …

As it became known on Friday, the robberies occurred on Wednesday both in Mödling and in Klosterneuburg. A financial institution in Vienna is also affected, but apparently it has been for a long time.

Unknown perpetrators are said to have staged a “film-ready coup” in Mödling, believed to have caused millions of euros in damage, the “messenger” reported Friday. The gang had smashed several lockers in the secure room safe area at the Raiffeisen Regionalbank Mödling and cleared them.

According to the report, the investigation began on Wednesday. On Friday, the case drew wider circles: as announced by police spokesman Johann Baumschlager upon request, the lockers of a financial institution in Klosterneuburg (Tulln district) were also emptied. This act is also said to have been committed on Wednesday. Baumschlager also confirmed that the same modus operandi had been used.

Initially, it was not clear whether they were the same group of perpetrators. “Traces are saved and compared,” Baumschlager said, referring to ongoing investigations by the Lower Austrian State Criminal Police Office.

Vienna also affected

A financial institution in Vienna-Döbling also became a crime scene. Corresponding reports from ORF and “Kurier” were confirmed by Baumschlager on Friday afternoon. In the case of the bank in question, the police assume that the thieves have been cleaning lockers, presumably on several occasions, since October. To do this, they would have “bypassed” the electronic system. that ensures access to the corresponding facilities in the financial institution. It is not yet clear how exactly the criminals proceeded, said police spokesman Marco Jammer.

Several lockers are affected, how many are still being determined. “The victims will only report,” the spokesman said, so the amount of damages cannot yet be quantified.

Döbling’s bank is so far the only affected bank in Vienna. The state police department does not want to reveal which bank is in the federal capital for investigative reasons.

Affected customers contacted directly

The lockers of the clients of three banks have been emptied by criminals. On Friday, a Raiffeisen spokeswoman confirmed that the group’s branches were affected, namely the Raiffeisen regional bank in Mödling and a Raiffeisen branch on Muthgasse in Vienna. At Bank Austria, these were safes in the Klosterneuburg branch locker system.

All affected clients of the two banking institutions were contacted directly, they were already at their banks, the institutions announced in the afternoon.

There it was a question of determining the damage after this robbery, which, according to the bankers, has a new criminal dimension. No information was provided on the amount of damage or the number of customers affected.

In Raiffeisen it was said that there were a manageable number of affected. Today there was talk of some safes at Bank Austria. Everyone was informed that nothing was left open, both houses said.

The events took place in mid-November. Neither the police nor the institutes in question reported how the perpetrators managed to break the highest security standards. The banks immediately turned on the police. In order not to jeopardize the investigation, which was in full swing, they did not want to provide further details. Certain secure variants, specifically 24-hour safes, are said to have been affected.

The banks themselves do not know what securities are stored in bank safes. With the rental contract for the safe, a standard contract is agreed, which varies according to the institute, and has an average of a few thousand euros. However, this can be determined individually during the consultation and increased by additional insurance. Banks have invested large sums in their security systems in recent years.

Police said today that the electronic barriers that secured access to the relevant room, the secure room, must have been bypassed.
