Handball
The weakened men of the Austrian Handball Federation (ÖHB) began their qualification for the European Championship in Graz on Wednesday with a close win against Estonia. In the first international match since January, the team of team boss Ales Pajovic, who had played without numerous supports such as Nikola Bilyk, Thomas Bauer, Robert Weber and Janko Bozovic, won by 31:28 (16:16).
The best pitcher of the selection made up almost entirely of national league players was Tobias Wagner with seven goals. Sebastian Frimmel and Lukas Hutecek each scored five times. “A strange match, I have to say, but in the end we managed to finish two points,” said Pajovic. The many new players would have sold well under the special circumstances and given the little preparation time.
Before the match, which passed without an audience due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was a minute of mourning in Vienna in memory of the victims of Monday’s terrorist attack.
Much cramp and struggle
ÖHB’s top scorer Wagner saw a lot of tension and struggles against Estonian outsiders, “but we had a lot of new players and in the end we won and we are happy by two points.” Acting captain Gerald Zeiner spoke of two immensely important points in the group with favorites Germany and Bosnia. Herzegovina and like Pajovic praised the debutants.
The next task with Bosnia on Sunday away from home is, in theory, much more difficult. After several cases of coronavirus, the Bosnians only made it to Thursday’s game with eleven players against the favorites of the group Germany and will not be able to play against Austria with the best lineup.
