FOrmel-1 world champion Lewis Hamilton (35) returns to his Mercedes after testing positive for the corona virus at the season finale this weekend in Abu Dhabi. As announced by the racing team and world motorsports association Fia on Thursday evening, the Brit will receive Grand Prix approval on Sunday (2.10pm on the FAZ ticker live for Formula 1, as well as on RTL and Sky ) after several corona negative tests.
Hamilton tested positive for the corona virus twice a week on Monday and then had to go into quarantine in Bahrain. Thus, he missed the penultimate round of the World Championship last Sunday at Sakhir, where Williams’ regular driver George Russell replaced him. The quarantine ended and Hamilton traveled to Abu Dhabi on Thursday. When he arrived, he tested negative and thus fulfilled the last condition to enter the Formula 1 paddock. There he can already participate in Friday’s practice, Russell will drive again for Williams at the weekend.
Hamilton said in a video of his infection Tuesday: “It was definitely one of the hardest weeks I’ve had in some time.” At the same time, he announced that he would start at the last Grand Prix of the year if allowed.
He has been the new world champion since the Turkish Grand Prix in mid-November. However, its sporting future is unclear. Hamilton’s contract ends at the end of the year, and an extension for the Silver Arrows is very likely.
