Concern for hundreds of kidnapped schoolchildren is increasing in Nigeria. Following an attack by gunmen at the state high school in Kankara, in the northern Katsina region, affected parents expressed growing concern. The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, condemned Monday’s attack and demanded the immediate release of the kidnapped children.
In Friday’s attack, previously unidentified attackers fired submachine guns. 200 of the 600 children and young people estimated at the boarding school facilities were able to escape, amid exchanges of gunfire with the police. Eyewitnesses reported that many children were abducted.
According to the authorities, a total of 333 students remain missing. The police and the army launched a search. “I was hoping the authorities would tell me what happened, but so far there has been nothing,” Salish Masi told the German press agency on Monday. Two of his children have disappeared.
According to initial investigations, it could be criminals who kidnap people to extort money from them. The Islamist terror group Boko Haram has carried out similar attacks in the past.
