Kickoff signal for corona vaccines in EU-27 countries: EMA gives the green light for the approval of the first COVID-19 vaccine by the EU Commission.
We are delighted that a first COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for the EU-27. In this way, we have reached one of the most important milestones in the fight against the pandemic. Now it is possible for us to undertake a comprehensive fight against the health, social and economic consequences of the pandemic. The fact that approval can take place in less than a year is due to the exemplary global cooperation of the pharmaceutical industry and the acceleration of official processes.
Mag. Alexander Herzog, Secretary General of PHARMIG
Vienna (OTS) – With the positive decision of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) today, December 21, and the expected approval by the EU Commission, the initial shot can be given for COVID vaccines in Austria and the EU. Mag. Alexander Herzog, Secretary General of PHARMIG, calls this the most important achievement of 2020: “We are delighted that a first COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for the EU-27.
“In early January, the committee responsible for the EMA will discuss the approval of more candidate vaccines.
The vaccines will now be delivered as soon as possible. Like all EU-27 countries, Austria will initially receive 10,000 doses of vaccine, which will soon be administered according to the federal government’s vaccination strategy. It begins with the vaccination of people in homes for the elderly and the elderly, for health workers and in high-risk groups. “We have to be aware that not everyone who wants to can be vaccinated immediately. However, throughout the year and with the expected approval of more vaccines, there will be enough vaccines available for everyone, ”Herzog said.
Manufacturers, distributors, authorities, and the government are now doing everything in their power to create the logistical prerequisites for the highest possible vaccination rate and thus avoid further economic impacts. Now it is also about ensuring that sufficient numbers of people take advantage of vaccination. Herzog appeals to the population: “When making a vaccination decision, also think about those who, for health reasons, cannot vaccinate themselves. The year 2020 has already cost many people’s lives and has had profound effects on each and every one of them. A decision in favor of vaccination is for your own protection, but it always serves to protect those who cannot be vaccinated. “
