Katharina Liensberger won gold in the parallel women’s competition at the Cortina World Ski Championships on Tuesday. It is the 100th gold medal for the Austrian Ski Association at the world championships.
AUSTRIA. The women of ÖSV are celebrating their first medal since the 2017 World Cup. The gold medal was initially awarded to both the 23-year-old from Vorarlberg and the Italian Marta Bassino. There was a photographic finale in the final, and due to the fastest time in the second race, Bassino was initially named the winner.
Two runners first
However, the result was corrected: the FIS announced that both riders would receive the gold. The bronze went to Tessa Worley from France. “There are clear rules that state that there are clearly ex-aequo placements in the big and small finals,” said ÖSV women’s head coach Christian Mitter. Toni (Giger) dug up the rule again and asked the jury. “There are two regulars. Gold medals,” Mitter said.
Sporting director Toni Giger said: “It is plausible if two are equally fast that they are also ex aequo. Thank God we checked. “
“Oh my God. That’s great, I don’t even know what to say. I don’t know how to do it now. It’s just amazing. Winning a gold medal is something very special. It’s a dream, that has come true today,” said the woman. from Vorarlberg, which was later chosen as the winner. For Liensbergers it is his first individual medal after silver in the 2019 team at Aare.
For the ÖSV it is the 298th medal in world championships and the fourth gold medal in Cortina after those of Vincent Kriechmayr (relegation, super-G) and Marco Schwarz (combination).
ÖSV’s men left empty-handed
The ÖSV men were left empty-handed in the men’s side competition: Frenchman Mathieu Favre won gold, silver went to Filip Zubcic (CRO) and bronze to Loic Meillard (SUI). Combined world champions Marco Schwarz, Adrian Pertl and Roland Leitinger missed the final by a few hundredths of a second. Black still has a good chance of winning a medal in Sunday’s slalom.
