In Germany, since the beginning of November, there are regulations that are already known in Austria for the so-called “blocking light”: the mask requirement was extended, contact restrictions were introduced, but schools and retailers remained open. You should be able to meet up to ten people during the holidays.
Since then, on the one hand, we have not gotten any closer to the stated goal of bringing the number of new infections below 50 per 100,000 population for seven days (currently no federal state falls below the mark), on the other hand, the number of cases as we know them in Austria, far from being reached.
The 14-day incidence is currently 304.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In Austria it is still almost double, despite a clear downward trend. It is currently 599.5 cases (see graph above). If you look at the number of new infections in the recent past, Austria, which has just emerged from lockdown, is now at a similar level to Germany. There were 23,318 new infections from Monday to Tuesday in Germany, in Austria there were 2,377.
According to the German Press Agency, Merkel’s plan is also controversial in some federal states. Especially in Red ruled Berlin and Thuringia with the “left” Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, Merkel is said to bite the granite.
While the governments of Bavaria, Saarland and Baden-Wuerttemberg, such as Merkel, pushed for a quick additional meeting of prime ministers, the heads of governments of Berlin, Bremen, Lower Saxony and Thuringia doubted it was necessary. Ramelow said that Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung: At the Prime Minister’s Conference we issued a regulation until January 10, 2021 ”. Everybody knows what to do.
