Germany declares Tyrol a risk zone

Germany extends its travel advisory for Austria. After Vienna, the two federal states of Upper and Lower Austria are now on the Swiss quarantine list.

In addition to the Austrian capital Vienna, Germany has now also declared the western state of Tyrol a coronavirus risk zone. This was announced Friday night on the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) website. The decision was made jointly by the Federal Ministries of Health and Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition to Tirol, the Austrian capital Vienna and Vorarlberg have also had a risk rating related to the crown for a long time. “For persons entering the Federal Republic of Germany and who have been in a risk area at any time within the last 14 days prior to entry, there may be an obligation to segregate in accordance with the respective regulations of quarantine of responsible federal states, “says RKI’s website.

The Czech Republic and Luxembourg were fully classified by Germany as risk areas. From the German point of view, 15 of the 27 EU countries are at least partially corona risk areas, Spain, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg are even fully so. Poland is the only one of Germany’s nine neighboring countries that has not yet been affected.

Exceptions for travelers

Tyrol is a popular holiday area for Germans in summer and winter. There is also the Ischgl ski resort, which was one of the hot spots from which the pandemic spread in Europe last winter. Participants from Vienna and Vorarlberg must already submit a negative Covid-19 test upon entry, which should be no more than 48 hours old. Otherwise, a 14-day quarantine requirement will apply.

The quarantine obligation is handled differently between German federal states, for example Schleswig-Holstein requires a second negative corona test at least five days after entry to end the quarantine early. Travelers who have not been to Vienna or Vorarlberg in the last 14 days can enter from Vienna-Schwechat Airport without restrictions.

There are also exceptions for travelers, transit (for example, in the German corner and from the little Walsertal) and when entering for family matters such as caring for relatives, visiting a partner or children, as well as medical treatments and other valid reasons. As of October 15, people from risk areas, including Vienna, Tirol and Vorarlberg, must register digitally before entering the country. Anyone who does not comply with their obligation to register runs the risk of being fined. There should be exceptions for travelers and other travelers in so-called small border traffic.

Travelers returning from risk areas must undergo corona tests 48 hours before or after entry and then quarantined until the test result is there. The travel warning is not a ban, but it is intended to have a significant deterrent effect on tourist travel.

Switzerland also focuses on Lower and Upper Austria

On Friday, Switzerland also included the federal states of Lower Austria and Upper Austria in the list of risk areas. For travelers who have stayed in one of the two federal states in the last ten days before entering the country, a quarantine obligation will be applied starting next Monday in Switzerland, the Swiss Ministry of Health announced this Friday. The same conditions are in force for Vienna from September 14.

European countries Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Hungary, Great Britain, as well as the French region of Brittany and the Italian region of Liguria are also new to the Swiss list of risk areas. Entry from risk areas must be notified to cantonal authorities. Even with a negative corona test, the ten-day quarantine cannot be avoided or shortened.

Travelers in transit excluded

Travelers in transit who have been in a state or area with a higher risk of infection for less than 24 hours are exempt from the quarantine obligation.

Countries and regions in Switzerland that have registered more than 60 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days are considered risk areas. This limit is also exceeded by some cantons, including Vaud and Geneva in western Switzerland. However, there are no travel restrictions within the country.

Stelzer doesn’t understand the risk

“Incomprehensible and absolutely incomprehensible on the basis of objective figures” is the Swiss decision of the Governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP). “I do not know on what basis Switzerland makes such decisions”, the situation of the crown in the state is stable.

There are currently 725 active cases in Upper Austria, the 14-day number of cases is 65.18, well below the Austrian average of 99.46, Stelzer argued. In addition, the origin of the infection is found in 81 percent of those affected in the state, making Upper Austria “the state with the most resolved corona cases.”
