After the new tender for the areas on the Danube canal, three more areas have now been allocated after “Fabelhafter Sommergarten de Fräulein” and “Danube Waterfront”.
INNER CITY. After the Court of Auditors criticized the non-transparent allocation of the areas in the Danube Canal and the subsequent sublease, the city decided in 2017 to re-tender the areas. Tel Aviv Beach, Feuerdorf, Central Garden, Hafenkneipe, Adria Wien and Badeschiff Vorkai were re-assigned in the first round, and existing operators were awarded the contract for the first four areas.
Not so with Adria Wien and the pre-dock area. After the follow-up projects “Danube Waterfront” and “Fräulein’s fabelhafter Sommergarten” are finally underway after legal decisions, the competition has been successfully concluded for three more spaces. The results were presented by Secretary of State Magnus Brunner, head of the DHK (Danube Flood Protection Competition) at the federal level, and the responsible city councilor, Ulli Sima.
Gastronomy and bike workshop
Throughout the year the three bars “Urban Tribes”, “Muse” and “Die Werkstatt” will open their doors. Local is a flexible term in these cases. “Urban Tribes”, which will open on the city center side between Salztorbrücke and Marienbrücke, is a mix of meeting point for bicycle enthusiasts, a repair shop, but also a small bistro bar. The restaurant will become the point of contact for all bicycle enthusiasts and messengers in Vienna. A public access bathroom and consumer-free areas are also part of the concept.
Continue to “Muse”, an art gallery with an adjoining restaurant across from “Urban Tribes”, which should be accessible for free all year round. The restaurant does not pretend to be a simple gallery, but is based on “augmented reality”, that is, a mixture of reality and computer-generated images that are projected in the real world. During the day, Muse focuses on breakfast and brunch. During the day there is a smooth transition to the restaurant bar. The gallery was awarded the contract for the Adria Wien area.
The workshop that is not
Last but not least, event professionals Herbert and Georg Fechter (“Masters of Dirt” organizers) and their partner Kaffee-Barrista Silvia Maino were able to secure the second part of the pre-dock area, next to the Badeschiff. Under the title “Die Werkstatt”, the Viennese café style is brought to the Danube canal in combination with Austrian pastries and Josefstadt coffee. It all comes together with a kind of wheeled motor skills park and a stage for a live show. A mix of disconnected music, cabaret, comedy, literature, dance or cabaret is played for free. The workshop is also planning public toilets and consumer-free zones.
“We are constantly developing the Danube Canal to make it a high-quality downtown recreation area by the water,” said Ulli Sima, the city councilor responsible for the Danube Canal, “the focus is on a bid for all with space and a balanced mix of modern gastronomy in different price ranges “.
Initial plan of “Promenade of the Danube”
Two bars should have been open a long time ago, but couldn’t due to a legal dispute with the former tenant. He refused to vacate the area, which started an eternal trial in court. However, in November 2020, the area was evacuated.
Now that everything is finished, the new bars can finally be unlocked. The fabelhafter Sommergarten de Fräulein “already had its premiere in a reduced form last summer, but we had to wait for the Danube Waterfront, which was awarded the contract for the glass house on the second district side. This year, both restaurants should be able to take turned off in its entirety.
Contracts limited to 10 years
With regard to contracts, the recommendation of the Court of Auditors is followed: new leases are limited to 10 years.
Of course, the new operators were not chosen arbitrarily. A jury made up of experts from the fields of architecture / design, public procurement and contract law, tourism, gastronomy and spatial planning decided the future of the space.
