According to Washington, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, will participate in the virtual G20 summit this weekend. Trump will participate in deliberations of major industrialized and emerging countries chaired by Saudi Arabia on Saturday, a senior administration official said.

So far, it was unclear if Trump would attend the virtual meeting. “Until the last minute we cannot even be completely sure whether Trump will be there,” said an EU diplomat.

Trump has yet to acknowledge his defeat in the November 3 presidential election, making it difficult for Democrat Joe Biden to take office on January 20. Several of those who spoke at the summit already congratulated Biden on his victory.

On Friday, Trump had already participated in the forum of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community, which was also held online. US President Donald Trump and China’s ruler Xi Jinping had not spoken for eight months. Now the two have virtually met again. Just one day later, they will meet again at the G20 summit. For Donald Trump it will be the last major international appearance as president.

At the G20 summit held as a videoconference, in which Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) also participates, the first topic is the global corona pandemic. In addition to the seven main industrialized countries and 13 emerging countries, countries affected by the pandemic such as Spain, Singapore and Switzerland, as well as representatives of the UN, the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO) will participate.

On the second day of the summit, chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Salman, the focus will be on fighting the climate crisis together. Other debt relief for the world’s poorest countries as a result of the crown crisis is also on the agenda.

Fight against global warming denied, pandemic minimized

Critics accuse Trump of repeatedly downplaying the crown pandemic and failing to take appropriate action. He attributed complicity to the WHO in the spread of the new virus and initiated the withdrawal of his country from the UN organization.

In the United States, more than 253,000 people have died as a result of a corona infection, more than in any other country in the world. The number of confirmed cases of infection is also the highest in the world at more than 11.8 million.

Trump refuses to participate in the international fight against global warming. Following its decision, the United States withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.
