A 27-year-old French woman was arrested in India because she is said to have filmed a video of her naked on a Ganges bridge that is considered sacred. The woman released on bail faces up to three years in prison if convicted. She apologized for the video on Sunday, but at the same time emphasized that she was not completely naked.
According to police, the French woman was arrested on Thursday after posting a video online showing her naked on the Lakshman Jhula catwalk, popular with tourists. The bridge became world famous after the Beatles’ trip to India; to this day it is a magnet for backpackers and yogis.
Violation of Internet law
The woman is now facing charges for violating India’s internet law, police in the city of Rishikesh, in northeast India, said on Saturday. “Maybe such things are not considered offensive in France,” said local police chief RK Saklani of the AFP news agency. However, Rishikesh is a holy city and the Lakshman-Jhula bridge was crossed by the deities Ram, Lakshman and Sita according to Hindu teaching.
After being arrested, the French woman told officers she made pearl necklaces that she sold on the Internet, Saklani said. She wanted to advertise her company with the nude video. The woman also took nude photos of herself in a hotel room. Her cell phone was confiscated.
The 27-year-old told AFP that she recorded the video to protest sexual harassment. These are the order of the day on the Lakshman Jhula Bridge. “Every time I cross it, they bother me.” Also, she was only partially undressed for the video and was not fully nude, the young woman continued.
