Eintracht Frankfurt’s successful streak came to an end on Friday night. After five wins in a row, coach Adi Hütter’s team lost 2-1 at the start of Matchday 23 of the German Bundesliga at Werder Bremen after a 1-0 lead. Team ÖFB defender Martin Hinteregger and Co. failed to improve from fourth place or narrow the seven-point gap with league leaders Bayern Munich, who had recently been defeated.
For the Frankfurt side, the match started custom, top striker Andre Silva, who returned from back problems, scored his 19th goal of the season in the ninth minute with a header across the crossbar. This makes the Portuguese number two in the league behind Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski (26). After the break, the local team marked the turning point. Theodor Gebre Selassie (48th) met first, then Joshua Sargent (62nd). The video assistant referee (VAR) had to watch both shots closely.
ÖFB-U21 team player Romano Schmid nearly increased to 3: 1 (69th), but his goal was not recognized for offside. Schmid was on the field until the 79th minute, Marco Friedl played defense like Hinteregger on the other side. Stefan Ilsanker just sat on the bench in Frankfurt.
Heated mood
For the guests it was only the second loss in the last eleven rounds, in which they won nine times. Twelfth-ranked Bremen came off the pitch as the winner after three games without a win and accumulated important points in the fight to stay in the league.
“It was very important for us to score again, it was a great team performance from A to Z,” Schmid said in an interview after the game. As he walked into the locker room, Bremen’s Hinteregger and Niclas Füllkrug clashed, and even before that there were heated arguments during the game.
