Under the government’s proposal, the salary increase will only be canceled until. To decide this, the votes of the SPÖ or FPÖ are necessary.
For FPÖ and SPÖ, a zero salary round just for top politicians is not enough. The ÖVP and the Greens have finally decided to forgo a salary increase, but only up to the level of club president. FPÖ club boss Herbert Kickl is not enough, as he said Thursday: “We want a zero salary round until the Federal Council.” The SPÖ would also like to have a full round of zero pay, but has not yet decided whether it will accept the coalition’s proposal.
On Monday at 12:30 p.m. an extraordinary session of the National Council will take place, according to information from the APA, the parliamentary groups agreed on Thursday. The extraordinary session is necessary to repair a formal error in the limited increase in luxury pensions. In the course of this, the government factions, after days of pressure from the opposition, were finally ready to suspend the pay raise for politicians.
The proposal of the ÖVP club coach, August Wöginger, and the green club coach, Sigrid Maurer, who spoke of a sign in the year of the crisis, provides for a partial exemption: in the salary pyramid, the zero salary round should be effective from the federal president to the club officers. The latter remain at 15,153 euros. All lower political salaries will be increased by 1.5 percent as provided by law. This affects simple deputies and all members of the Federal Council.
Constitutional majority required
A constitutional majority is necessary for implementation, so the SPÖ or FPÖ must agree. Both parliamentary groups are still hesitant ahead of Monday’s National Council meeting because they would actually like to have a full round of zero wages for politicians. “They are all the top winners in politics, which I think can be expected without further ado,” argued FPÖ coach Kickl. “I hope the government will turn this half-solution into a total solution.” He invited Wöginger and Maurer to “come to their senses” at the end of the year, and invited the SPÖ to lobby together on this, Kickl said.
At a “difficult time for many people,” “it was also the policy of showing solidarity,” Red Club deputy chief Jörg Leichtfried told a news conference. Politicians at all levels must refrain from adjusting for inflation and will try to implement it. Despite repeated inquiries, Leichtfried was unable to find out whether the SPÖ would ultimately agree to the partial round of zero pay in the special session. He does not yet have the application from the ÖVP and the Greens and “we will see how it develops.” However, the SPÖ will submit its own application for a comprehensive zero salary round.
NEOS are part of the politicians’ zero salary round. “If you can make a contribution by freezing the salaries of top politicians in this crisis, then we will probably agree,” deputy club chief Nikolaus Scherak told the APA. “However, if the government were seriously interested in making reasonable savings, in really providing support in this crisis and not just looking at the beautiful headline, it should save on itself and massively reduce its 210 million RP,” Scherak noted also in.
