Bayern, champions of the Champions League, defeated FC Sevilla 2-1 in extra time. More than 15,000 fans watched the match in the high-risk area of Budapest.
Bayern Munich also won the European Super Cup after the league, cup and Champions League triple. Coach Hansi Flick’s team prevailed on Thursday night in Budapest with 2: 1 (1: 1, 1: 1) after extra time against Europa League champions FC Sevilla. Joker Javi Martínez scored the decisive goal in the 104th minute.
Next Wednesday, the fifth German Super Cup title against runner-up Borussia Dortmund in Munich. Coach Hansi Flick’s team also continued their remarkable streak: since 7 December 2019, they have not lost and won 31 of 32 matches. For Sevilla it was the first defeat since the beginning of February.
UEFA’s controversial experiment with spectators
As a football fan, Flick “wouldn’t have gone to Budapest”, as he put it on Sky TV before kick-off. But as a coach, of course, he did his job on the sidelines. For the first time, spectators were allowed to play in a UEFA match. Although the Hungarian capital is a high-risk crown area, 15,500 spectators came to the Puskas Arena.
The Bayern fans, who had traveled to Hungary despite all the travel warnings, had to wait a long time for Martinez’s winning goal to be celebrated. Previously, the national player Leon Goretzka (34th), who served as foreman, tied the early penalty of Sevillian striker Lucas Ocampos (13th) at the Puskas Arena, which was close to a quarter full. The Bavarians staggered several times after that.
Bad luck
David Alaba, for whom it is the 25th title with Bayern, was unwittingly the center of attention from the start. His blow against Ivan Rakitic judged referee Anthony Taylor a foul and imposed a penalty, which Lucas Ocampos safely scored (13th). But Alaba, who was absent from the first Bundesliga game with a thigh injury, also played a decisive role in Martinez’s substitute’s winning goal: Alaba’s attempt to shoot from the edge of the area failed to contain the goalkeeper Bono, the Spaniard, who, according to media reports, already agreed with Athletic Bilbao, was on the spot with his head.
Before that, Bayern had to make a real show of force against the disciplined Spaniards and had another winning match in their ranks in Manuel Neuer: in the 87th minute, he prevented the 1: 2. And the Joker of Sevilla had another great opportunity in extra time, but Neuer directed the shot to pole (92).
