Top German jumpers Markus Eisenbichler and Karl Geiger got off to a good start at the second stop of the 69th Four Hills Tournament. In qualifying for the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Eisenbichler came third as the best DSV eagle at 135.5m, while Oberstdorf’s winner Geiger was also no weakness at fifth with 132, 0 m.
The latest ski jumping winner of 2020 was Slovenian Anze Lanisek, who at 139.0m was very slim ahead of Norway’s World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud. Granerud achieved by far the longest distance at 143.0 m, but did not set a telemark. Granerud is the favorite in Friday’s decision (2pm / ARD and Eurosport).
Nine out of twelve German jumpers managed to enter the field of competition, but with a big difference from the best two. The third best German was Richard Freitag (Aue) in 21st place, Severin Freund (Rastbüchl) was 23rd.
Olympic champion Andreas Wellinger (Ruhpolding), who was only in 53rd place, was eliminated. For the second overall in 2017/18, struggling for connection after cruciate ligament surgery, the Austrian tour should not continue.
The year before, Geiger had won the rankings and took second place in the competition. Since Sven Hannawald on January 1, 2002, no German jumper has won at Gudiberg. Hannawald also made the last German overall victory on the tour perfect five days later.
