At the Monza Italian Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly took advantage of a race break and a misstep by the Mercedes team for a sensational Formula 1 victory.

Until the middle of the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza royal park racecourse, it looked like Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was heading for his 90th victory in the premier class of risk-free motorsport. However, the failure of Haas driver Kevin Magnussen completely changed the course of the race. The race management sent the safety car to the track and closed the pit lane because the Dane’s car had stopped near the pit lane entrance. The report of the closure of the pit lane did not reach the Mercedes team. The Silver Arrows took the top world championship leader to the pits to change tires, Antonio Giovinazzi in the Alfa Romeo did the same as the six-time world champion. The two received a ten-second stop-start penalty for their offenses.

Before the two could serve their sentences, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc brought the race to a halt after 27 laps. The Monegasse lost control of his car at the Parabolica corner and crashed into the wall of the tire without braking. Leclerc was unharmed, but the incident meant the next low blow for Ferrari. In the early stages of the race, his teammate Sebastian Vettel had to park his car after a brake failure. Team boss Mattia Binotto comes under increasing pressure due to the home race double.

Despite Ferrari’s pathetic performance, the Italian national anthem sounded at the award ceremony after the race. Alpha Tauri driver Pierre Gasly took the lead a few laps after the restart and at the finish line celebrated his maiden Formula 1 victory. The sensational victory is a balm for the Frenchman’s soul. Gasly was demoted to the Italian sister team after a poor performance at Red Bull Racing in the preseason. In addition, the 24-year-old lost one of his best friends in Anthoine Hubert after a serious accident. Just one year later, Gasly Alpha Tauri (formerly Toro Rosso) won the second victory in Formula 1. Twelve years ago, Sebastian Vettel also won the first race for team manager Franz Tost’s Italian team at Monza. “It’s amazing. I can’t even figure out what happened. We benefited from the Red Flag, but I’m over the moon, so much has happened in the last 18 months,” Gasly said.

Behind the Frenchman, Carlos Sainz in a McLaren and Racing Point driver Lance Stroll completed the podium. It was the first podium since the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2012 without Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull. The Monza bulls did not score points after a technical defect in Max Verstappen’s car. His teammate Alex Albon was only 15 years old.
