Eyewitnesses who had observed the accident informed rescuers in South Tyrol and immediately began the search.
A tragic avalanche accident occurred on Sunday in South Tyrol Schnalstal. Below the Kreuzspitze, at an altitude of about 2,200 meters, an avalanche occurred that buried Michael Grüner, who had been president of Raiffeisen Landesbank for almost 25 years until May. In the accident, Grüner’s wife, Monika Gamper, who was president of the City Theater and the Kurhaus Association in Merano from late 2015 to September 2019, reported to the news portal www.stol.it.
Eyewitnesses who had observed the accident informed rescuers in South Tyrol and immediately began the search. A rescue team from Ötztal was also dispatched. First aid was able to free the two victims, but for them any help came too late. Grüner, 65, was already dead at the time, but his 52-year-old wife was still showing faint signs of life, but all resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful.
Grüner was considered an experienced mountaineer. He had also climbed the peaks of the Himalayas in recent years. In South Tyrol there was a level 3 out of 5 avalanche hazard on Sunday, the South Tyrol State Alert Center reported.
