In Scheveningen, near The Hague, a tragedy occurred during a storm on the coast. Two of the victims were trained first responders.
Five surfers died in an accident off the Dutch coast. According to police, surfers were ripped off a beach in Scheveningen, near The Hague, on Monday in a strong wind in the rough sea.
The rescuers brought two surfers from the North Sea on Monday night and, despite attempts to resuscitate them, they could not be saved. Three more bodies were recovered on Tuesday.
Spray “like an avalanche”
Two of the crashed surfers were trained lifeguards, Den Haag “night mayor” Pat Smith said on the Hague FM radio station. They had disappeared in the spray during training, which “had fallen on them like an avalanche.”
The storm had badly stirred the sea. Rescuers also had a hard time making their way through the dew. Photos from the crash scene showed helicopters, the rotor blades of which were used to clean solid foam at the harbor entrance in Scheveningen. Several lifeboats also made their way through the waves.
Bathing and surfing events are rare on the Dutch coast. However, in a storm, the situation can quickly become dangerous.
