Following an emergency approval, coronavirus vaccines began in the United States on Monday morning (local time). The CNN television channel broadcast images of a nurse’s vaccination with the media from the Mainz pharmaceutical company Biontech and its American partner Pfizer in the eastern New York borough of Queens.

“I want to build public confidence that vaccination is safe,” Sandra Lindsay said after the vaccination. “We are experiencing a pandemic, we all have to do our part. I want to encourage everyone to get vaccinated.”

The United States is currently experiencing another devastating wave of the pandemic with record numbers of infected people, sick people in hospitals and deaths. Many hospitals report overloaded emergency rooms and a lack of nursing staff to the ever-increasing number of infected people. On Monday, the Johns Hopkins University census in the United States was expected to exceed 300,000 deaths since the pandemic began.

Within minutes of the vaccination, President Donald Trump tweeted: “First vaccine administered. Congratulations America! Congratulations world!” Trump claims the rapid scientific success of the vaccine, but Pfizer has repeatedly emphasized that it is not part of the US government’s program to be able to act independently politically. Now employees of health centers and residents of nursing homes and nursing homes must get vaccinated first. It is the largest vaccination campaign in the history of the country, according to CNN, the first vaccinations should begin on Monday in all states.

“We had to go through a lot in this city,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a morning interview with CNN. “Today is a day for which we have waited and prayed.” In the metropolis of millions, the situation had worsened again in recent weeks and the number of cases had increased significantly, but not comparable to the situation in spring. New measures went into effect Monday in New York City, after which indoor dining at restaurants and bars was once again suspended.

Pfizer and Biontech had also applied to the European Medicines Agency (Ema) for approval of the corona vaccine. The opinion of the expert committee will be available no later than December 29, EMA Director Emer Cooke said in Amsterdam on Monday. “European citizens have told us that they want speedy approval, but more importantly, they want a comprehensive review of the benefits and risks of the vaccine so that they can be sure that it is safe, effective and of high quality.”

Unlike the US, Canada, and Britain, the EU does not issue an emergency license. According to the EMA director, the conditional marketing authorization ensures that Covid-19 vaccines meet EU standards for all vaccines and drugs.

At the beginning of the month, the British authorities had given this preparation an emergency approval. It was followed by Canada, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Mexico. The Gulf state of Kuwait also issued the vaccine with emergency approval, as a representative of the Health Ministry announced on Sunday. Russian and Chinese vaccines are already used in several countries.

The US government has contractually secured the delivery of 100 million doses of Pfizer / Biontech vaccines. The American pharmaceutical company Moderna announced on Friday that the American government was purchasing another 100 million doses of its candidate vaccine. These cans would be delivered in the second quarter of 2021. The Moderna vaccine has not yet been approved by the FDA and a decision is expected later this week.
