There is a surprising twist with the first personal consequences in the discussion of official mistakes before the Vienna terror attack. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (Vice President) and Vienna Police Chairman Gerhard Pürstl announced on Friday that Erich Zwettler, head of the Vienna State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight Against Terrorism (LVT ), “at your request”. Two LVT officers who were responsible for assessing the danger from the future IS attacker, Kujtim F.
The change is surprising because the day before Pürstl had praised the “good work” of the LVT and BVT constitutional protection officers. It was about F.’s attempted purchase of ammunition on July 21 in Bratislava, which the Slovak Interior Ministry had reported to Vienna two days later via Europol.
Meanwhile, there are new findings that point to “intolerable mistakes,” Nehammer said. According to this, in July, before the trip to Bratislava, the German authorities reported the arrival of two officially known IS threats to their Viennese colleagues, Pürstl said.

As an LVT surveillance showed, the two men met with Kujtim F. in Vienna. Nothing could be said about the content of the conversation because “there was no great eavesdropping.” Regarding Slovakia’s subsequent report, the risk assessment “could have had other consequences under certain circumstances,” Pürstl conceded. The first step is the consequences for the staff, Zwettler will be replaced on an interim basis by the head of Styrian LVT, Rupert Meixner. Meanwhile, the Vienna Regional Criminal Court has imposed preventive detention on eight of the 15 men arrested after the attack. It is strongly suspected that you contributed to the murder by supporting the murderer before the attack and that you were involved in a terrorist organization.
Mosques closed
The Minister of Education, Susanne Raab (VP), yesterday ordered the closure of two mosques where the murderer was active. The affected one is the Tewhid Mosque in Vienna-Meidling, which was founded in 2016 by the Community of Islamic Faith in Austria (IGGÖ). The Melit Ibrahim mosque, an association outside the IGGÖ in Ottakring, was already known as a breeding ground for radicalization. Islamic State terrorist Mohamed M. is said to have remained at this facility, which is now being disbanded in accordance with the Association Law. (luc)
