The military is almost sacrosanct in the US, commitment to the military is a patriotic duty, and an attack on the honor of soldiers is the last taboo. If you drag the military to earth, you will end up in the devil’s kitchen, especially a Republican president.
When the timid First Lady intervenes via Twitter in the controversy over Donald Trump’s alleged quotes about fallen soldiers as “losers” or “idiots,” there is a fire on the roof of the White House. The president sent Melania Trump and a dozen personnel to the defense front as cavalry. The fact that she immediately stopped the planned suspension of the military newspaper “Stars and Stripes” is another sign of panic on her team.
Joe Biden and the Democrats stabbed in the flank. His calculation: a large number of Republican patriots could overflow. With the demotion of former General John Kelly, his former chief of staff, Trump is doing himself a disservice. Many military personnel, including former Pentagon chief James Mattis, have already blown themselves up. If Kelly, who was loyal to date, unpacks, Trump could possibly finish.
