FC Cádiz got the following big surprise in the First Division: after the promoted team managed to defeat Real Madrid in October, Cádiz also won the home game against FC Barcelona 2-1 (1-0). It was the Blaugrana’s first loss to Cádiz since May 1991: Ronald Koeman, the current FC Barcelona coach, was still on the pitch when his team scored 4-0 at the time.
Cádiz went ahead after eight minutes: Óscar Mingueza, who once again replaced the injured captain Gerard Piqué at FC Barcelona, headed in a corner at his own goal. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen initially saved from the line with a reflection. The attacker from Cádiz Álvaro Giménez maneuvered the ball into the goal at point-blank range (minute 8).
The stranger then retreated deep into his own half. At halftime, FC Barcelona had more than 80 percent possession of the ball, but few significant chances to score. This is how a home defender made the tie fit into the picture: Cádiz center-back Pedro Alcalá faked an unsustainable low center from Jordi Alba in the short corner (57).
The last point, however, was for Cádiz: 35-year-old former national player Álvaro Negredo, who has been part of the promotion since this summer, scored just one minute after taking the lead again for Cádiz (63.) Previously, Clement Lenglet hadn’t been able to control a throw-in in his own six-yard box, so goalkeeper ter Stegen had to fight Negredo. The forward prevailed and pushed from very close.
Lionel Messi (84th), Miralem Pjanic (86th) and Antoine Griezmann (89th) missed their best chances to bring Barcelona back into the game. It would have been deserved only to a limited extent: Cádiz not only held up well defensively, but also had good counterattack opportunities. In the table, Cádiz is now in fifth place, two positions and four points ahead of FC Barcelona. However, the Catalans have played two fewer games.
