First bad news for ski jumpers in the 2020/2021 Corona season: After the first World Cup match in Wisla, Austria’s head coach Andreas Widhölzl and two athletes tested positive for Covid-19. The ÖSV draws conclusions.
As the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) officially confirmed on Wednesday morning, there are the first corona cases in the ski jumper camp. After the start in Wisla, Poland, head coach Andreas Widhölzl and the two ski jumpers Gregor Schlierenzauer and Philipp Aschenwald tested positive.
“Despite compliance with all safety measures and observance of strict ÖSV rules, some people from the ski jumper camp tested positive for Covid-19 in a routine test,” says a statement from the ÖSV. Consequently, Widhölzl and World Cup record winner Schlierenzauer are showing mild symptoms.
World Cup team quarantined
All three people have entered quarantine. All the other athletes from the Austrian team who competed in Wisla last weekend are also in quarantine.
As a purely preventive measure, the ÖSV sports management decided not to allow any other supervisors who were in Wisla to travel to Kuusamo for the next World Cup weekend.

“This is a setback for our ambitions at the World Cup, but the safety and health of everyone involved is one hundred percent in the forefront here. We are currently verifying whether those athletes who continue to test negative for the virus and show no symptoms can travel to the third season of the World Cup in Russia. The decision is open here. The World Skiing Championships in Slovenia are on the program in just under three weeks, which is currently our main goal, ”said Mario Stecher, Austrian sports director.
ÖSV with team B in Kuusamo
The rest of the international entourage of the World Cup will take a charter flight from Munich to Kuusamo on Wednesday afternoon, where the next individual competitions will be on the weekend’s agenda (event summary with calendar and information). Before the start, all other participants tested negative and further tests will be carried out on the athletes and supervisors in Kuusamo on Wednesday night.
Instead, ÖSV will initially be with a B-team in northern Finland. Florian Liegl, group coach of the second training group, and the two assistant coaches Björn Koch and Alexander Diess have nominated Manuel Fettner, David Haagen, Timon-Pascal Kahofer, Clemens Leitner, Markus Schiffner and Marco Wörgötter.
