“I am proud of my grandchildren. Thanks to them I can fully enjoy my life again,” said Ludwig Veit from Klaffer am Hochficht. At lunch, his heart suddenly stopped beating. The family immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation and grandchildren Jonas, Jana and Laura bravely provided first aid until rescuers arrived. Only a few days later, Ludwig Veit was able to hug his grandchildren again.
Grandpa Ludwig, Grandma Brigitte and their granddaughters Jana and Laura (both 11 years old) sat at the kitchen table for lunch. Her brother Jonas (15) was in the next room studying for school. “Suddenly the grandfather collapsed without life,” describe the granddaughters those moments in the first days of July when they immediately noticed that something was wrong and together they gave first aid. “We put Grandpa on the floor,” says Jonas. “Grandma called 911 and I started resuscitating him. My sisters and grandma helped me.” The family also received the support of the employee of the rescue control center, who supported the rescuers by phone. “It was an anxious minute before the rescuers arrived. I am proud of our children,” said a happy father Alexander Mitgutsch. “You saved grandfather’s life.” A rescue helicopter took Ludwig Veit to Kepler University Hospital in Linz, from which he was allowed to leave a few days later.

In an emergency, every moment makes the difference between life and death. “The only thing you can do wrong is not to do it,” says Rotkreuz president Walter Aichinger. In 99 percent of the cases nothing happens, in exceptional cases it pays to be 100 percent prepared.
