Roger Federer will not serve in Dubai next week after his comeback tournament in Doha. The winner of 20 Grand Slam tournaments reported via Twitter that he would not participate in the ATP hard court tournament.
“It was great for me to be back on the ATP tour. I enjoyed every minute that I was able to play in Doha. A big thank you to the best and most loyal team that helped me get this far again, ”Federer wrote in a tweet. And the Swiss added: “I have decided that it is best to go back to training, so I decided to withdraw from the Dubai tournament next week.
Upon his return to the tennis tour, Federer recorded a narrow victory against Britain’s Daniel Evans in Doha before losing to Georgian Nikolos Basilashvili in three sets in the quarterfinals. Until this comeback, Federer had not played an official match since the beginning of February 2020 due to two operations on his knee. At that time he failed in the semifinals of the Australian Open against Serbian Novak Djokovic. Like every year, his big goal is Wimbledon, where he has already won eight of his 20 great titles to date.
Rafael Nadal will also not be in the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai. The still world number two has yet to fully recover from the back injury he suffered in the run-up to the Australian Open. Therefore, the Spaniard had already skipped the ATP Cup and then reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne. Nadal has not played since.
