Favorites are easy to find on the return to the evening, as the 28 most recent slaloms won Mikaela Shiffrin (19) or Petra vlhova (9). While Bernadette Schild missing after another cruciate ligament tear Katharina Gallhuber in the Zauberberg slalom for the first time. Where the cruciate ligament was torn, he wants to trade his tough comeback.

The Gallhuber of Lower Austria was like Katharina Liensberger Two years ago one of the ÖSV’s great slalom hopes. She made it to the top ten regularly and caught up Olympia 2018 in South Korea Bronze in the slalom and silver with the team before seriously injuring his knee two years ago while preparing for Semmering’s home race there.

Gallhuber: “The last time was not easy for me”

The comeback a year later was initially promising, an “inexplicable” failure in 2019. Lienz but it diverted Gallhuber from his course. “From then on, it bought me a bit of guts. Since then, I haven’t been as aggressive in the beginning as I used to be,” explained the 23-year-old from Göstling. “That was a new situation for me, because until then it was always uphill. So the last time it was not easy for me.”

Now this low level must be overcome. Gallhuber has become more athletic and lively, among the Levi-Slalom (failure and position 22), the parallel race in Lech / Zürs (40th) and the Semmering European Cup and FIS races and hopes that the famous change can be launched as soon as possible. “I have to be patient, be calm and keep working. Every race is an opportunity.” Racing at home is always “crazy” for them, even without spectators like this time. “I’m looking forward to my first time”, Lower Austria is excited about today’s race (3:15 pm / 6:30 pm, ORF 1 live).

Gallhuber: “It’s good that our girls are involved”

Gallhuber is also encouraged by the strong performance of her teammates, like Liensberger, twice third. “That helps to see where you stand. It’s good that our girls are involved. My goal is to get back there too.”

Shiffrin against Vlhova is also called Gallhuber’s great slalom duel. “Mika is a good skier, Petra does a lot with her body.” The record of the two is really impressive. Shiffrin has 43 slalom victories in the World Cup alone, only Ingemar Stenmark in giant slalom (46 victories) and American compatriot Lindsey vonn in relegation (43) otherwise they have won at least 43 times in a discipline. In his most recent 45 slalom starts, Shiffrin has been on the podium 42 times and has won 32 times.

The hottest ÖSV iron from Liensberger

Without the long hiatus after his father’s death, Shiffrin’s slalom record would probably look even better. Vlhova took advantage of this and won the last five slalom of the World Cup, the Slovakian was on the podium 15 times in the last 17 races. Almost unbelievable: with a total of ten slalom victories, the tall Slovak is already number two among active riders behind Shiffrin.

Austria’s hottest iron in Semmering is again Liensberger. As Levi’s third twice, the Vorarlberg woman has already climbed two podiums and has always landed in the top seven in the most recent nine slalom races. The last slalom victory of the women’s ÖSV is of course still on November 30, 2014 in Aspen (Nicole hosp).

“I scored the points for the first time four years ago, and I have good memories of Semmering,” Liensberger said happily. “Home races are always fun, even without spectators.” Liensberger lamented Schild’s failure (“Really very tragic”) as well as Stephanie brunner. “Bernie struggled to recover and now they have stopped him again. I know the feeling very well,” said the Tyrolean, who has torn three cruciate ligaments in 17 months.
