Education Minister Heinz Faßmann has once again rejected speculation about an extension of the fall break to reduce the number of corona infections.
“The autumn holidays are coming as planned,” he emphasized in the Ö1-Mittagsjournal. The Austrian Federal Association of Middle and High School Parents Associations (BEV) is not only against an extension, parents’ representatives could even imagine that school holidays would be suspended.
Extension of the autumn holidays “neither planned nor foreseen”
An extension of the fall break between October 24 and November 2 beyond these ten days “is currently neither planned nor planned,” said Fassmann, who wants to keep schools open as long as possible. After all, the numbers would show that schools are not the places where infections are spread. Especially among children 6 to 14 years old, the numbers are “extremely low.” Furthermore, the children are socialized and cared for at school.
“If you take an item out of here, it creates social friction.” According to Faßmann, the final decision on the closure of large-scale schools rests with the administrative authority of the district (in the district) or the governor (in the state) or the minister of health (throughout the country).
Normal classes should continue after fall break.
It is very important that normal lessons are repeated after the fall break, emphasized BEV spokeswoman Elisabeth Rosenberger in a letter to the Ministry of Education, referring to the knowledge gaps that some students had in the confinement. “It would be incomprehensible to parents if educational institutions were closed prophylactically, but bars and gyms were left open and private family celebrations were allowed to continue.” Many parents would have exhausted their vacation in spring and summer. Therefore, caring for their children at home would pose enormous, often unsolvable problems for many.
Quarantine of individual students or classes is of course necessary and understandable on a case-by-case basis and parents would also support all measures for rapid testing of “suspected cases”. But: “We parents need the certainty that school is once again a fixed point that can be planned in these difficult times and that children have a place to learn in a family environment and also develop socially.”
