In the closure that has been in effect since Tuesday, Farmers Markets, Direct Sellers, Farmers’ Stores, Convenience Stores, and Farm Gate Sales can remain open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The same applies to outdoor markets, the Ministry of Agriculture told the APA. Occasional markets, and therefore also Christmas markets, on the other hand, must remain closed during the crown lockdown.
The closures decreed do not apply to agricultural trade, including animal auctions, horticulture and the trade in seeds, feed and fertilizers, the Ministry of Agriculture reported in a written statement on Tuesday. Hygiene rules (masks, distance), of course, must be observed everywhere.
Hunting is considered a professional activity and is still allowed.
Farmers must be able to carry out their activities without restrictions
According to Agriculture Minister Elisabeth Köstinger (ÖVP), farmers and foresters should be able to carry out their activities in the most unlimited way possible. The agricultural sector itself is also affected by the closure. “Gastronomy as an important sales market has collapsed again. By enabling delivery and collection services, we are also creating the incentive for restaurants to continue processing and selling food,” said the minister. The farmers union ÖVP said: “Food producers and peasant traders ensure the supply of the country.”
