F1: Verstappen expects two races at Spielberg at the start of the World Cup

Young Red Bull star Max Verstappen expects two races at Spielberg for the late start to the season in Formula 1.

The Dutchman won the two previous Austrian Grand Prix. “I always like to drive there,” the 22-year-old emphasized in a video interview with ServusTV on Monday night.

“I hope we have two races there, of course.”

The top ten best planned races in the main class have already been postponed or canceled due to the crown crisis. At Spielberg, the kick-off for a shortened World Cup should now take place on July 5. A second ghost race could follow on July 12, if the Austrian government approves the events under the conditions presented.

“For us as a team there is always pressure for racing there,” Verstappen said of Spielberg. So far, however, he has been convinced at the Red Bull Ring. In 2020, however, he has to survive without the many Dutch fans on the track. That’s a shame. “It is always very special to see so much orange. But the most important thing is that we are driving again for the championship.”

“I hope we can drive fast again.”

Double events aim to keep the number of races in a double-digit range in a season affected by global travel restrictions. Would it be easier to win a shortened World Cup? Verstappen: “Usually we are always quickly at the end of the season after the summer break. I hope we can now take the same step.”

His feeling in the car had already been good during the winter tests in Montmelo, near Barcelona. There were no races after the start of the season in Melbourne in mid-March. “There are always different things that we can improve,” said Verstappen. “I hope you see it in Austria.”

The Dutchman stays in shape at his adoptive home in Monaco with virtual races on the simulator. “Of course, I hope we can get out there quickly again. I hope it’s Austria. I’m ready.” Successful ghost races at Spielberg could signal new races at the World Cup. Verstappen: “Of course I hope that if Austria passes, we can do other races.”
