(Motorsport-Total.com) – That’s the feeling of the weekend: Lance Stroll achieves pole position in crazy Formula 1 qualifying in Istanbul. The Canadian set the fastest time in rainy qualifying in Turkey and achieved his first pole position in Formula 1. His teammate Sergio Pérez completed Racing Point’s solid result with third place.

Only Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was able to keep up and take second place, just under three tenths of a second. Alexander Albon finished fourth.

For Mercedes, however, there was nothing to gain: Lewis Hamilton was only sixth behind Daniel Ricciardo (5th / Renault), almost five seconds behind! Valtteri Bottas finished just ninth behind Esteban Ocon (7th / Renault) and Kimi Räikkönen (8th / Alfa Romeo). Antonio Giovinazzi finished tenth in the Alfa Romeo.

Sebastian Vettel was able to beat his partner Charles Leclerc this time. The Ferrari driver finished twelfth and is two places ahead of Monegassen (14th). The two McLaren of Lando Norris (11th) and Carlos Sainz (13th) will start with them. Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) turned 15 years old.

The worst conditions of the entire session prevailed in the first quarter. A little over half of Q1 had passed when the race control waved the red flag because the rain had gotten too heavy.

The subsequent clearance was short-lived as Romain Grosjean (19./Haas) had become the gravel trap at Turn 1. Thus, after the renewed interruption, all drivers had only one attempt to improve.

Qualifying ended for Kevin Magnussen (16./Haas), Daniil Kwjat (17./AlphaTauri), George Russell (19./Williams) and Nicholas Latifi (20./Williams). Latifi had doubled the price with a start on that lap, in which many drivers had improved. The race management will examine the corresponding laps after qualifying.
