Extended Christmas Break: School only starts on January 11

Before students and teachers return to schools, testing will take place on January 7 and 8. Parents are also invited to test themselves.

For a safe start to school after the Christmas break, mass testing of teachers and students must take place in January before they return to the classroom. As the Ministry of Education announced on Tuesday, they want to offer schoolchildren, parents and teachers on January 7 and 8 to be tested for a corona virus infection. After Christmas, regular school operations will not begin until January 11.

It is not yet clear if there is a mandatory test for teachers. In either case, students and parents are not required to take the exam; however, it must be explicitly addressed to high school students in particular. Anyone who needs care on January 7 and 8 can send their children to school. Regular lessons will not take place on these two days.

New generation of tests

The tests themselves are also doing something: a new generation of tests will be used that no longer penetrate the nose or must penetrate the throat area.

The Governor of Carinthia, Peter Kaiser (SPÖ), recently asked that the Christmas holidays be extended until January 10 inclusive, a return to the classroom before the tests would be “paradoxical”. Lower Austrian Councilor for Education Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister (ÖVP) also spoke at Ö1 “Mittagsjournal” in favor of returning to schools on January 11, before students should study and repeat at home.
