An explosion in Formula 1!
Engine supplier Honda will leave Formula 1 after the end of the 2021 season.
Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Alpha Tauri announced this on Friday.
“As a racing team, we understand how difficult it was for Honda to make the decision to leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season. The shift in focus in the automotive industry has led to Honda’s decision to reallocate its resources. We understand and respect the thoughts behind this, “explains Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.
The Japanese decision is surprising because the partnership with Red Bull only started in the 2019 season.
Horner: “A challenge”
“His decision is obviously a challenge for us as a team, but we’ve been in a situation like this before,” says Horner, who estimates that his racing team is prepared to meet this challenge effectively.
Horner continued: “While we are disappointed not to extend our partnership with Honda, we are extremely proud of our mutual successes: both Red Bull-owned teams have achieved five wins and 15 podium finishes.”
According to Horner, the common goal of Red Bull Racing and Honda remains unchanged for 2020 and 2021: “We want to fight for victories and for the world championship.”
Red Bull Seeks Engine Partners for 2022 and Beyond
The RBR boss also makes it clear that Red Bull Racing will remain committed to Formula 1 in the long term: “We will now take the time we need to find the most competitive engine solution for 2022 and beyond.”
Max Verstappen celebrated Honda’s first Formula 1 victory since 2006 at the 2019 Austrian GP. Honda returned to the premier class of motorsport in 2015 and initially returned to supply engines to its former partner McLaren.
In 2020 he also achieved a sensational triumph with Pierre Gasly, who won the Italian GP in the AlphaTauri.
“It will not be easy to find an engine partner like Honda was. But of course we will look at all possibilities to find the best solution from 2022,” explains AlphaTuri team leader Franz Tost.
