In October they had to be postponed indefinitely. Now it is clear: the European professional training championships Euroskills will be held in Graz from 22 September.
The EuroSkills, the European professional championships, will take place after cancellation in 2020 from September 22 to 26, 2021 in and around Graz. The president of the Styrian Chamber of Commerce, Josef Herk, announced Wednesday in Graz. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Graz town hall, the competitions will be held on the grounds of the Schwarzl leisure center in Premstätten, in a “tent city”, a kind of “Olympic village”, they said.
The EuroSkills had been postponed several times, but the crown pandemic always thwarted plans. The announcement of the new date should now indicate a departure. Around 450 participants are expected in the European professional championships for skilled workers.
Sponsors stay on board
The cost of the event was initially estimated at around 10 million euros. In any case, the postponement would make it more expensive, Herk said, how much is still open. The federal, state city of Graz, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and the Styrian Chamber of Commerce want to share the money. Plus, there’s money from other supporters – all partners and sponsors have stayed on board so far, Herk said.
Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer (ÖVP) was cautious: “I hope we can do it.” He did not want to hide the fact that the next easing was “on the brink” next Monday. “If we do not achieve this step, there will be no EuroSkills, then we will have to re-lock,” he warned. Now it depends on each individual.
The bar is very high for the participants from Austria
The approximately 450 expected participants will come from 31 countries and the best participants will be chosen from around 45 professions. The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday September 22nd and the competitions will run from Thursday to Saturday. The closing ceremony, including the award ceremony, is scheduled for Sunday, September 26. Skilled workers are allowed up to age 26, originally 25 was the upper limit, but due to the postponement, the maximum age has been temporarily raised. The next WorldSkills and EuroSkills will also be postponed one year
Austria is one of the most successful countries in EuroSkills in the six participations so far: in 2012, 2014 and 2016 it was overall European champion, in 2008, 2010 and 2018 it was runner-up.
