Rapid Wien have missed the third inning of the UEFA Europa League knockout stage. Hütteldorfer did not go more than 2-2 in the last group match against Molde FK. Molde captain Wolff Eikrem stunned Rapid with his goals in the 12th and 46th minutes. Marcel Ritzmaier and Melih Ibrahimoglu scored for Hütteldorfer. Like group champions Arsenal, the Norwegians advance to the sixteenth final.
Molde surprises Rapid early – Ritzmaier calls shortly before halftime
The long awaited final game in Hütteldorf started wildly. After a minute and a half, Knasmüllner pulled away from a distant rebound, but his shot went wide of the goal (2nd). Soon after, Rapid was open to a counterattack by the Norwegians, so Wolff Eikrem was able to carry out without hindrance. Fast goalkeeper Gartler was there and prevented the goal (4th).
As in the first leg, the Norwegians turned out to be tough opponents who acted very annoying and got into the duels very compromised. After 12 minutes, the guests surprised SK Rapid with the early opening goal: Barac did not look good after a long shot from Linde, Wolff Eikrem grabbed the leather, let Barac and Hofmann out and shot into the short corner – 1- 0 (12.). Two minutes later, Kara had the best chance to equalize immediately, but the Rapid forward narrowly edged behind a cross from Grahovac (14th).
However, Rapid found it very difficult to find solutions on offense. And also on the defensive, the Viennese were very unstable and insecure. In the 35th minute, Kara found her second big chance, but was again unable to use a header from close range. Soon after, Linde threw herself hard on a Ritzmaier hammer. Shortly before the half-time whistle, the Hütteldorfer managed to equalize: Thorsten Schick hit the ball hard from the right into the back box, where Marcel Ritzmaier was stopped from 18 meters and sank the ball into the left corner of the center – 1: 1 (43.).
He sleeps fast at the beginning of the second half and is coldly punished.
Rapid manager Didi Kühbauer made a double change during the break, bringing in Demir and Fountas two new forces for the offense. But the second 45 minutes couldn’t have started any worse for the hosts: James fell for Aursnes, who served Wolff Eikrem with the heel. The veteran, who played for Manchester United in his youth, walked away and sank the ball just 22 seconds after the restart at the far corner – 1: 2 (46th).
Substitute Fountas kept things going on offense and forced Molde goalkeeper Linde to do a brilliant act, but the Norwegians made the space extremely tight and made it very difficult for Rapid. And after 57 minutes it was almost over after Brynhildsen shot completely alone in front of Gartler. However, this attempt passed by a hair.
Rapid pushed everything forward again in the final phase, but the Norwegians stayed true to their line, played very calmly and allowed practically nothing. In the 83rd minute, however, Linde was able to excel on a Kitagawa shot. Melih Ibrahimoglu scored in the 90th minute with a deflected long shot to make it 2-2. In the end, the Norwegians celebrated their second entry into the knockout stage of the Europa League.
