EU budget: Poland and Hungary block for the moment

[ad_1]

At the meeting of the EU ambassadors, the representatives of the two countries blocked the 1.8 trillion euro package consisting of the EU budget and aid for the reconstruction of the Crown, for the time being.

Now the cause should become one of the main priorities of the video summit of the heads of state and government on Thursday. They have to find a way out. Because time is of the essence. As long as there is no final agreement between the states, the EU Parliament cannot approve the budget for 2021 to 2027. Due to the new own resources it contains, it must be ratified by 23 national parliaments.

Without money crown without a deal

Even more important: without a deal, states will have to keep waiting for 750 billion euros in budget-linked crown aid. Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, and his Polish counterpart, Mateusz Morawiecki, do not want to impede the budget or help from Corona. They can use the money for their countries hardest hit by the pandemic. But they use the veto against the budget (this requires unanimity) as a means of pressure against the mechanism of the rule of law.

They both reject this in their current form. For the first time, it is intended to link the payment of EU funds from the budget and reconstruction fund to the fulfillment of European fundamental rights and freedoms.
