After more than three weeks of fierce fighting, the Ethiopian government claims to have ended its offensive in the Tigray region. “The federal government now completely controls the regional capital, Mekele,” Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said at the weekend.
The military operation was carried out as accurately as possible and ensured that civilians were not attacked, he said. The “Tigray People’s Liberation Front” (TPLF) has not yet ruled on the matter. However, experts warned yesterday that the end of the offensive would not necessarily mean the end of the conflict.
After months of tension, in early November the Ethiopian army launched an offensive against the TPLF, which is in power in the northern region. The Popular Liberation Front accused the army of also attacking civilians.
1.5 million people affected
Aid organizations warn of a humanitarian disaster in Tigray. Caritas and other NGOs recently said that neither party to the conflict was willing to “give access to NGOs to people in need.” Around 1.5 million people are threatened by the clashes and their water and food supplies are cut off, they warned.
