The three policemen who stood in front of the gates of the German parliament building on Saturday were received by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace on Monday. A good occasion? No, there is really nothing to celebrate. But thanks. And that’s what Steinmeier did. The images of the three men’s police operation are ubiquitous: they were there when hundreds wanted to take over the Reichstag, the seat of parliament.
Hours before the demonstration, the speakers had rhetorically warmed up the participants on Saturday, as the KURIER was able to observe on site. There was talk of being “energetic” and getting rid of “dictatorial fascists.” Behind a banner with the slogan “Merkel’s criminal gang”.
At dusk, they climbed the barrier and reached the stairs. Including: citizens of the Reich, neo-Nazis, Crown rebels and a prominent member of the youth organization AfD. At this time, the police placed very few emergency services or only three men on the stairs. As the chief of operations announced yesterday, there were more colleagues, but they were invaded. Little by little they hurried further, who then pushed people back with truncheons and irritating gas.
New alliances?
Now several questions arise: How could the situation in the Reichstag escalate to such an extent? And how can it be that older, younger families – that is, “normal people” – who also protested against Corona’s measures have no problem meeting in a demonstration with conspiratorial ideologues, anti-Semites, neo-Nazis, Reich citizens, extreme opponents? to vaccines and esotericists? ? According to experts, what partially unites the mix of environments is the narrative that the “popular will” must be implemented. There is a natural order that must free itself from “evil.” Depending on the ideology, it is the government, the industry, or a so-called Jewish elite.
They are stories that, as you heard in the conversations on Saturday, are trapped in many people. After criticizing the measures, it was quickly pointed out that there was a “master plan” for this. The protesters would peacefully defend their freedom. The fact that there are others standing alongside them who want to imprison politicians, demand a court martial, question the state and democracy, was not a problem for some. “The measures affect everyone,” said Timo de Thuringia, when asked how he was with the far-right participants.
